Walnuts too tough to crack
Thanksgiving brings thoughts of all the things to be thankful for. For the Hornets, that was a trip to the state semi finals despite opening the season 1-2. They were thankful for the 10 game winning streak that led them to the match up with Big Walnut the day after Thanksgiving, not to mention the 33 – 7 record of this Senior class. They were thankful to have 8 players including the co-offensive player and the defensive player of the year in the 2007 All-Southwest District Football Team. They were thankful for the two-team kicking records set by young members of the soccer team this year. They were thankful for the scout teams who did everything they could week in and week out to get their team ready. They were thankful for the coaching staff and trainers that give all the time required to insure they were the best they could be. Most of all the Hornets were thankful for the unwavering support of their family, friends and community during this football season.
At the end of the night the scoreboard read 21-7 but that does not come close to telling the story of the game. The first quarter came to close with a 7-7 tie, both teams fighting for every inch. The story of the night was the effort given by the ball hawking Big Walnut defense. The Hornets drove deep into Big Walnut territory on 7 of their possessions only to have the defense pick them off to stop the drives. Just before the half Big Walnut went ahead 14-7. That was the difference in the game until late in the 4th quarter when Osterman was intercepted again and that was returned 92 yards to bring the score to 21-7. Not the ending to this season we all wanted but great nonetheless.
Many of us can point to some special event or a game that stands out. For me, the thing that stands out is the success of all of our kids and the spirit they carry.
I propose a toast to the 2007 Hornets, SWBL Champions, Division III Regional Champions, and most importantly our kids. Thanks for the memories guys.
