Believe it or not some people still hold on to unsupported beliefs that chiropractic treatment is unscientific. In view of the fact that thousands of studies exist showing the efficacy of chiropractic treatment, let us explore some of the current science.

In a recent article published in the prestigious medical journal Spine, researchers conducted a randomized controlled study of 115 patients with chronic spinal pain. The average duration of pain for people in the spinal manipulation control group was 8.3 years. In favor of chiropractic, the researchers found that when compared to those taking medicine, the spinal manipulation group had 5 times more effective results. The consistency of the results provides evidence that in patients with chronic pain, manipulation results in greater short-term improvement than medication.

Another study was conducted by The Journal of Orthopedic Medicine in 1999, where scientists wanted to determine which patients with chronic whiplash will benefit from chiropractic treatment. The conclusion showed that chronic pain resulting from whiplash injury is common. Furthermore, it states chiropractic is the only proven effective treatment in chronic whiplash cases, and 57% of those studied achieved a full recovery status.

As far as the safety of chiropractic care versus NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) we can look at an article from The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. This 1995 study concluded that by a factor of several hundred times, cervical manipulation for neck pain is much safer than the use of NSAID’s.

Thousands of studies, including those performed by medical journals, exist showing the effectiveness of spinal manipulation.
