On November 13, 2008, the Monroe Area Community Foundation was presented with a $10,000 grant from the Middletown Community Foundation at the construction site of the new Veterans Memorial.  Located  on the corner of Route 63 and Main Street,  the $150,000 project is scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day.   The grant will be used to help cover some of the costs of installing electric for the lighting of the memorial, which will feature the "Spirit of America," a large bronze eagle on a pedestal, and an illuminated American flag.Monroe's city manager, Bill Brock, contacted Ron Tubbs, director of the Monroe Area Community Foundation, about ways to cover these costs.   Although it has never been done before between foundations, Mr. Tubbs spoke with the executive director of the Middletown foundation, T. Duane Gordon, about a grant.  Mr. Gordon said the distribution committee (Middletown Foundation) reviewed the request and approved it because it honored our veterans  who were willing to make the most ultimate sacrifice when called upon for their country.  Planning and fundraising is being done by a 14-member committee of residents, along with Brock.   To help the committee, State Sen. Gary Cates secured $100,000 from the State Capital Program.  In addition, about $50,000 of in-kind services from local businesses has been raised.   You can help by either donating or purchasing  a $75--4" x 8" paver to honor a veteran, family member, business or organization.   The pavers include three lines of 15 characters each.  For more information,  go to the website of the Veterans Memorial Committee  at  or call Ed MacDonald at 539-8826 or Ron Tubbs at 513-320-3674.

Since the Monroe Area Community Foundation is serving as the Memorial depository, payments should be made and sent to the Monroe Area Community Foundation, c/o Veterans Memorial, 820-C Lebanon Street, PO Box 56, Monroe, OH  45050.   By chance, if you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of the Foundation, go to or  e-mail your questions to
