Are School Backpacks User Friendly?

With the school year starting up again, it is time for our kids to begin bearing the load of carrying their school books. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) reports that young children are suffering from back pain at much younger ages than ever before; and the ACA believes that the use of overweight backpacks is a major contributing factor. In recent years, there have been numerous studies involving the use/misuse of backpacks.

Some school districts (mainly in urban areas) are even removing lockers from school buildings--which is forcing students to carry all their books with them all day. Backpack loads produce changes in standing posture when compared with unloaded posture. One study of 817 children between ages 12 and 17 concluded that there are statistically significant associations between back pain and backpack use, female gender, body mass index, general health, physical functioning, and bodily pain.
